Behind The Light

Lumi is Marc & Mayaline

Lumi are a two-piece alternative electronic rock band from Beirut, Lebanon, with Marc Codsi on synths and drum machines & Mayaline Hage on vocals and guitar.

HISTORY
Lumi formed in 2005, three years after Marc & Mayaline met and started jamming with a collective that included stalwarts of the Lebanese post-war indie music generation. Bored of the grand narratives around tellings and retellings of the war, they came together as a way to express more intimate stories, steering clear of the Orientalist exoticism of their geographic origins.

In the summer of 2006, their songs became anthems of the Lebanese underground. The unexpected success of their video for Don’t Fuck With My Cat caught the attention of a record executive at EMI. They produced their first album — Two Tears in Water (2008, EMI) — with the label, recording in Dusseldorf with Andi Toma (one half of Mouse on Mars). They toured Europe for a while, performing in Berlin, London, Paris and Barcelona (Sónar). Read More

HIATUS & RETURN
Four years into the band’s hiatus, the pair got back together following a chance encounter involving a flat tire. From the reconnection emerged a more vulnerable sound, mixing sombre and danceable electronics with a core of artrock-tinged riffs, all stretched out over tempest landscapes. Their music carries with it distinct failures and aspirations, much like the contemporaries they look to: Suuns, The KVB, Lebanon Hanover, The Kills, Factory Floors.

New Album: THE NIGHT WAS A LIAR
The band’s sophomore album — The Night Was A Liar (Studio Keeward, 2017) — is the conclusion of years of exploration, characterised by a mix of heavy electro beats paired with airy rock riffs and vocals that are spread out across lengthy progressive tracks. This album marks a landmark moment in time for Lumi, a moment of musical and artistic maturity.

It was recorded at the epicenter of the Montreal alternative scene at the mighty Hotel2Tango in the city’s Mile End district. Under the watchful eyes and ears of producer Radwan Moumneh (Jerusalem in my Heart), with the help of SUUNS’ Liam O’Neil on drums, and Jessica Moss on Violin. The years of exploration: of the self, of instruments and songwriting, come together in this new beginning for the band.

Album produced and released by Studio Keeward (Montreal), the Keeward artist-in-residence program • Mastering by Harris Newman (Grey Market Mastering)
